The work on the academic building at Badsinghari, where the second campus of the Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) has been proposed to be developed, is at its final stage. The varsity authorities are planning to relocate the Commerce Department to the new building once it is completed.
The GMU has been allotted 70 acre of land at Badsinghari to develop its second campus. While the second campus will be developed from funds of Rashtriya Uchachatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), the academic building on the land is being constructed with the fund of the World Bank.
Deputy Registrar UC Pati said the three-storey academic building will house 15 classrooms, office rooms and toilets. “We are hopeful that the work on the building will be completed by January 31 next year. The Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation is executing the work on the building,” he said.
Pati further said the number of students in the commerce stream is more than 1,200.
Official sources said the World Bank had provided Rs 9 crore, including Rs 2 crore for non-civil developmental work and Rs 7 crore for civil work. The construction work of the three-storey academic building is being carried out with Rs 7 crore.
On the other hand, the authorities of the GMU have also submitted the detailed project report (DPR) to the Department of Higher Education, for the development of its second campus on the allotted land recently. The institution had previously received Rs 27.5 crore from RUSA. The fund was utilised for the development of infrastructure in the existing campus of the university in Sambalpur city. The institution will get an additional grant of Rs 27.5 crore from the RUSA.
