Days after pro-Khalistan Sikh preacher and ‘Waris Punjab De’ head Amritpal Singh was arrested from Moga in Punjab and sent to Dibrugarh jail in Assam, his parents met him on Thursday. Amritpal’s parents were part of the delegation of family members of eight other detainees of ‘Waris Punjab De’, booked under the National Security Act (NSA) and currently lodged at Dibrugarh central jail.

The delegation was led by Shriomani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s (SGPC) executive member and legal counsel advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka. Meanwhile, the legal counsel of actor-producer Daljit Singh Kalsi and Amritpal’s close aide Papalpreet Singh — Simranjit Singh — also arrived separately along with Kalsi’s son at Dibrugarh Central jail.

Amritpal was the last one to join his eight associates who have been lodging at Dibrugarh jail and booked under NSA, including Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Papalpreet Singh, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Varinder Singh Johal, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Harjit Singh, Bhagwant Singh, Basant Singh, and Gurinderpal Singh Aujla.

“We have come to meet the family members. We have got permission from the Amritsar District magistrate to meet the members in Dibrugarh jail. We will challenge them in the Punjab and Haryana High Court,” said Bhagwant Singh Sialka.

He pointed that they all have been booked under NSA and with the same allegations. “Even the annexures attached to their cases are the same and this seems to be improbable…There is no criminal background of those arrested. It is definitely a conspiracy as there is no reason for them to be booked under the NSA. Amritpal was campaigning against drug abuse and was also engaged in preaching the tenets of Sikhism,” he said.

“We have appealed in the High Court to quash the charges under the NSA against them and the next date of hearing has been fixed for May 1,” he added.

Simranjit Singh said that the NSA has been slapped on them without any reason. “We will challenge it in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. We will fight against NSA which was slapped on them and they were brought to Dibrugarh jail which is over 3000 kms from Punjab. We will fight the legal battle in the court,” he said.
