: When businessman Sasanka Jena of Alabanka and Sikha Singh of Adaspur took their wedding vows, they simultaneously made another pledge— donating their organs. The timing of their pledge on their very wedding date left their guests and relatives awestruck. Even a few of them were inspired and committed to make a similar pledge in the coming days.
“Over 3,00,000 patients are on the waiting list for organs in India. Approximately, 20 individuals die daily while awaiting organ transplants due to shortage of organs in India. So, there is a dire need to come to their rescue,” said Sasanka. He brought a proposal about a month back to his fiancée for pledging organs for donation on the special day of his life i.e. on wedding day.
“As it’s a noble work, I was delighted by the proposal of my fiancé and also requested him that I would also pledge to donate my organ on the wedding day,” stated Sikha.
To sign the agreement, they had earlier communicated Body and Organ Donation Initiative (BODI) convenor Dr Pravas Acharya. On the wedding day, a member of the BODI came on their wedding day to help them with the formalities. The couple signed on the forms before they made announcements from the dais.
It is appreciable that they chose this special occasion to pledge their organs for donation. By doing so, they have created much awareness among the guests, stated Bishnu Das, a BJP leader, who attended the wedding of Sasanka and Sikha.
