CM writes to President, urges to intervene for peace in Manipur

Sunday, 23 July 2023 | PNS | Ranchi

Chief Minister Hemant Soren has written to President Draupadi Murmu regarding the ongoing violence between ethnic groups in Manipur and two days ago a leaked video on social media showing vandalism on tribal women of Manipur, making a poignant request for peace and harmony there. The Chief Minister has said that he is distressed and worried about the escalating situation in Manipur. According to the information received from the media, hundreds of innocent people have already lost their lives due to the violence. There has also been damage to property and public infrastructure. A sense of insecurity has arisen among the many ethnic groups living in the areas.

Through the letter, the Chief Minister said that Manipur has been burning for more than two months. As per information, more than 40 thousand people including children have been displaced in Manipur and are living in temporary camps. With tacit support from some vested interests, this caste violence continues unabated, which is sad. Many international sportspersons from Manipur have also appealed to the central government to restore peace in Manipur.

The Chief Minister said that the barbaric treatment meted out to the tribal women in Manipur two days ago is highly worrying and condemnable. This incident has shaken the entire nation to the core. The right to respect given to the countrymen in the Constitution of India has been completely demolished. A society should never stoop to the extent where people are subjected to that kind of physical, emotional and psychological cruelty. As we have seen in Manipur. It appears that peace, unity and justice in Manipur is on the verge of extinction.

In the letter to the President, the Chief Minister has urged that in this hour of crisis facing Manipur and the country, we look to you as the last source of hope and inspiration, who can show light to the people of Manipur in these difficult times. Therefore, in this critical situation, I appeal to show the way forward, ensure justice and take steps to ensure peace and harmony in Manipur. We have to stop the barbaric treatment meted out to our fellow tribal brothers and sisters. The situation in Manipur should be fine. Manipur needs ointment. As a country, we have to come forward and help, he said.
