In a bizarre turn of events, a body of a person was exhumed from burial ground in Jajpur district on Sunday for the purpose of insurance claim. The incident took place at Purunapani village under the Sukinda police limits.
One Prahlad Nayak had died in a road accident on December 7. His family members brought the body from the Sukinda Community Health Centre and buried it without the standard postmortem procedures.
Upon learning that a postmortem report was prerequisite for insurance claim, the deceased’s wife Gita Nayak informed police about the situation. Police, in the presence of Sukinda Tehsildar Damayanti Sahu, exhumed the body. The body was then taken to hospital for autopsy.
The Tehsildar said, “The family members of the deceased had brought the body from Sukinda hospital without adhering to proper procedures or informing the police. Nayak’s wife later lodged a complaint asserting that her husband died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle. In response to the complaint, police unearthed the body and transported it for a thorough postmortem examination.”
