'Constitution can't be a static document'

Saturday, 14 October 2023 | PNS | CUTTACK

The Thinkers’ Club here arranged a webinar to gather opinions on the necessity of further amendments to the Constitution.

The meeting was presided over by club president Barada Prasanna Das.

Justice DP Choudhury was the chief Speaker, while Professor Dr Manas Behera was the analyst and former secretary of the Public Works Department Dr Nanda Nandan Das was the observer.

The dignitaries and the intellectuals present said that as per the verdict of the Supreme Court, the basic structure of the Constitution should not be changed.

However, they further said that law itself has no value, unless it satisfies the genuine need of the citizens. There is every possibility of getting newer problems in future. So the Constitution of the country can’t be a static document only, they pointed out.

The discussion revolved around issues like reservation policy, poverty, inequality, employment, biparty system, relevance of Upper House, religion and communal harmony, Parliamentary decorum, need to educate citizens and representatives of people on Constitution, setting minimum qualification for the voters and representatives of people, regional inequality and limiting election expenses, etc.

The intellectuals wished that some steps are taken in respect of the above points to have a prosperous nation.
