‘Odias struggle for own culture in neighbouring States’

Friday, 22 December 2023 | PNS | CUTTACK

The Thinkers’ Club’s 92nd webinar was held here to discuss the plight of the fellow Odias, who are in Telangana, Bihar, Jharkhand and Bengal. The meeting was presided over by club president Barada Prasanna Das.

The population of the State is estimated at 4.8 crore and nearly half of this (Odias) are staying in the 32 districts of the four neighbouring States. President of the central Utkal Sammilani Dr Adaitya Prasad Patra was the chief speaker in the meeting. He expressed his unhappiness over the salary provided to the teachers of Odia in these States.

The 603 teachers appointed at these places through the Utkal Sammilani were paid a monthly salary of Rs 3,000 and this amount was enhanced to Rs 4,500 per month recently. The amount is less than the amount payable to unskilled labourers under the wage policy of the State Government. He also said that, every year members of the Assembly sub-committee on education visits these places to inquire about the situation but nothing has improved, said Dr Patra.
