A seminar on Neonatology was organized at Rotary Hall, Ranchi under the aegis of Rotary Club on Friday. It was inaugurated by the chief speaker Dr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO of Rani Children Hospital Ranchi, renowned neonatologist, Jogesh Gambhir, ex-Rotary Governor and CEO of Raj Hospital Ranchi, Dr. Vinay Dhandhania, CEO of Devkamal Hospital and ex-president of the club, Dr. Anant Sinha, Honorary Secretary Lalit Tripathi jointly.

Keynote speaker Dr. Rajesh Kumar while discussing the challenges of Neonatology and its recent progress said that in case of premature delivery the child has many serious health problems. In which difficulty in breathing, considerable loss of weight, jaundice, abnormal body temperature, cardiac arrests are prominent. Such children require an intensive care unit. Earlier, the facilities in a city like Ranchi were very less to save such children after birth. Children had to be sent to cities like Kolkata, Mumbai. It was also very expensive. Then the percentage of survival of children was hardly around 50. But now world class facilities related to neonatology are available in many hospitals of Ranchi city. Because of this, about 80 per cent of such children are getting success today.

Dr. Kumar said that such cases are mostly found in the case of poor families, because the woman does not get all the necessary vaccines during pregnancy. They also lack proper nutrition. In the case of neonatology, most of the parents of such families used to back down due to their inability to get the children treated. Dr Kumar said that at present the state government is giving immediate assistance of Rs 5 lakh under the Chief Minister's Jan Arogya Yojana. To take advantage of the scheme, it is mandatory to have a ration card in the name of the parents and birth certificate of the child.

Jogesh Gambhir, CEO of Raj Hospital, said that such events update people with new technology, facilities and knowledge in the medical field. In the case of neonatology, now the possibilities of saving more and more children and giving them a normal life have increased.

Renowned doctor and president of the club, Dr. Vinay Dhandhaniya said that the facilities needed to reduce the mortality rate of newborns are being made available in the city. There is a need to work together to reduce the death rate.

Dr. Anant Sinha, CEO of Devkamal Hospital and former president of the club, said that by sharing new information in the medical field, we can further improve the cases of neonatology. Such panel discussions will continue to be organized on other medical topics as well. Colonel UR Raj did the vote of thanks.

The Gift of Life scheme has been launched by the club under the joint effort of Rotary Club Ranchi and Rotary Mid Town Ranchi. Under this, those children who have a hole in their heart, such children will be operated at the Amrita Institute Hospital in Kochi. The whole process will be free of cost. The office bearers of the club have appealed to the parents of such children to contact the club.
