The Lonely Courage of Prime Minister Modi

In the intricate web of global leadership, few threads are as uniquely spun as that of Narendra Modi, the fourteenth Prime Minister of India. Modi's journey from the dusty tea stalls of Gujarat to the grand corridors of power in New Delhi is not just a tale of political ascension, but a testament to a kind of courage that is often overshadowed and dismissed in the world of politics - the courage of treading a lonely path.

At the heart of Modi's leadership style is a distinctive blend of solitary decision-making and a deep connection with the masses. He is not a politician who views the people as the public, but as a community.  And PM Modi is a community builder par excellence. He is a leader who, despite being surrounded by advisors and supporters, often appears to walk a path of his own creation. His time in public life is not just about physical solitude; it's an ideological and emotional state, where one's convictions are so strong that they often stand in stark contrast to prevailing norms. And he often surprises us, not because what he does is unpopular, but because what he does has already been dismissed as unthinkable by those who came before him.

Modi's courage is evident in his bold policy decisions. The demonetisation initiative, while contentious at the time, highlighted his willingness to take drastic measures against corruption. Similarly, the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), although initially disruptive, has been recognised for its long-term vision of a unified market. These decisions, taken amidst considerable uncertainty and opposition, exemplify a leader unafraid to walk alone if it means walking towards what he believes is right for his nation.

Another aspect of Modi's lonely courage is seen in his international diplomacy. Navigating a world stage where allegiances shift like sand, Modi has sought to position India as a global player, forging ties with both Western and Eastern powers while maintaining a distinct stance on issues critical to India's interests. This delicate balancing act, pursued with a mix of diplomatic charm and assertiveness, underscores a leader willing to stand alone on the global stage to carve out a place for his country.

But perhaps the most poignant aspect of Modi's solitude is found in his personal narrative. His lifestyle, marked by simplicity and an almost ascetic discipline, sets him apart from many of his peers. This personal solitude, mirroring his political path, speaks to a leader whose life is inextricably linked to his mission, a mission he pursues with a singular focus that often requires walking a path less trodden.

As Article 370 is assigned to the dustbin of history, PM Modi is already onto his next mission, with a zeal and relentlessness that is seen so rarely. The praise and criticism a mere footnote.

In the end, the lonely courage of Narendra Modi is not just about the decisions he makes or the policies he implements. It's about the profound sense of responsibility he carries — a responsibility to a nation of over a billion, each with their own hopes and dreams. It's about the willingness to be misunderstood, to be solitary in one's conviction, and yet remain unwaveringly committed to the vision of a resurgent India.

As the world watches India's trajectory under Modi's leadership, one cannot help but reflect on the blend of solitude and strength that defines his journey. It's a reminder that in the theatre of politics, the most impactful roles are often played by those who dare to walk alone.
