The Uttar Pradesh (UP) police have recovered the vehicle used by the attackers who targeted Dalit leader and Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad alias Ravan. The vehicle was found in a village in Saharanpur district. In a related development, the police in Amethi district have registered a case of criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after it was revealed that a Facebook page had issued a death threat to Azad prior to the attack.
Activists of the Bhim Army and Azad Samaj Party staged a demonstration at Parivartan Chowk, demanding increased security measures for Azad. However, they were subsequently taken into police custody.
Unidentified assailants had opened fire at Azad’s car in Saharanpur’s Deoband on Wednesday evening, as he was attending a ritual at a supporter’s home. A bullet grazed Azad’s abdomen, resulting in injuries.
The vehicle used in the attack was seized from Miragpur Village late on Wednesday night. The registration plate indicated that the car was registered in Haryana, according to police sources. Superintendent of Police (Dehat Saharanpur) Sagar Jain confirmed that Azad who was receiving treatment at Saharanpur District Hospital was stable.
