Prerna makes history as first woman to head Navy warship

Commander Prerna Deosthalee has become the first woman officer to command an Indian Navy warship. She was presented with the appointment letter on Saturday by Western Fleet commander Rear Admiral Praveen Nair. She will command a water jet fast attack craft INS Trinkat deployed on the western seaboard. At present, she is the First Lieutenant of the warship INS Chennai.

Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar announced on Friday the appointment of the first woman officer to command a warship. This marks the first time that a woman officer will assume command of a ship. According to sources, the officer is a qualified navigation instructor and has been involved in training observers inducted into the Navy. She is also the first woman officer to have served as an observer in the Navy’s Tupolev Tu-142 maritime patrol aircraft.
