Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has turned down the AAP's request to appoint Raghav Chadha as the party's interim leader in the Upper House. Aam Aadmi Party sources, however, said Rajya Sabha officials have suggested some correction in the letter sent to the Chairman for nominating Chadha as "interim leader" and the same would be addressed. They also denied reports that Chairman has turned down the party’s request.
Earlier this month, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had requested Rajya Sabha chairman to appoint Chadha as the interim leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Rajya Sabha as floor leader Sanjay Singh was in judicial custody.
According to sources, Dhankhar in a letter to Kejriwal said, "This aspect is subject to 'The Leaders and Chief Whips of Recognised Parties and Groups in Parliament (Facilities) Act. 1998' and the Rules made thereunder. The request, not being in conformity to applicable legal regime, is not being acceded to."
AAP sources, however, told news agency PTI the request (to appoint Raghav Chadha as the party's leader in the Rajya Sabha) has not been declined. "Some corrections were sought which will be addressed," AAP sources told PTI.
Earlier this month, the AAP leadership, in a letter to Dhankar, requested the appointment of Chadha as the leader of the party in the Upper House of Parliament in the absence of Sanjay Singh.
"I would like to propose the name of Mr. Raghav Chadha as the interim party leader in the Rajya Sabha until further changes are deemed necessary. We request that this change be allowed as per the rules and procedures of the Rajya Sabha," Arvind Kejriwal had written to Dhankar. The letter claimed that due to "health issues", Sanjay Singh was unable to discharge the role.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh is currently behind bars in the Delhi liquor policy case.
Chadha is one of the youngest members of the Rajya Sabha representing the northern state of Punjab. The AAP has a total of 10 MPs in the Upper House currently. The AAP has the fourth-largest strength in Rajya Sabha after the BJP, the Congress and the TMC.
