Women-centric initiatives in Bihar are a game changer

Bihar's extensive array of schemes have transformed the lives of women across urban and rural areas

Governments, both at the central and state levels, are implementing various initiatives nationwide to empower women. The unanimous approval of the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament underscores the consensus across all political parties on this crucial issue. Bihar's efforts in the direction of women's empowerment are gaining attention as a model for other states. The extraordinary changes witnessed in the lives of half the population over the past two decades deserve recognition. From promoting girl child education to providing 33% to 50% reservation for women in local governance and jobs, the Bihar government has made notable strides in involving women in nation-building.

As a result of these initiatives, young girls and women, who were confined to the thresholds of their homes a few years ago, are now actively contributing to various governmental and non-governmental offices, as well as Panchayati Raj institutions. The increasing number of girls in schools and colleges reflects the rising literacy rate among women in the state.

The Chief Minister's Bicycle and Uniform Scheme, launched with much acclaim, brought attention to Bihar's innovative approach. Schools that were once deserted are now thriving with enthusiastic students. The regions and communities where there was little interest in girl child education are now actively sending their daughters to schools and colleges. Despite numerous slogans and promises, the economic and social backwardness in communities where girls’ education was neglected has been reversed, thanks to the successful implementation of government schemes.

After the initiation of the Chief Minister's Kanya Cycle Yojana, many beneficiaries have not only uplifted themselves through education but have also secured jobs in the Bihar Police and become teachers . The transformation of the lives of the girl children in the state is not only an exemplary case of women's empowerment but also a beacon of hope for other states. Witnessing the empowered daughters, even parents in rural areas now find confidence, realising that daughters are not burdens but indeed bring prosperity to the family. The shift in mindset is evident, and today, daughters are cherished in every household.

The success of the Bicycle and Uniform Scheme marked only the beginning. Bihar is now implementing several other schemes that play a crucial role in the holistic development and upliftment of women. The reservation of 50% for women in the third-tier Panchayati Raj institutions has significantly contributed to bridging gender disparities. Bihar became the first state in the country to provide 50% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj institutions. Additionally, the government has ensured 35% reservation for women in the police force, challenging the dominance of men. This reservation has resulted in a notable increase in the representation of women in the Bihar Police Force, reaching 21.21% in 2022, compared to a mere 3.4% in 2013.

In an unprecedented move, Bihar is providing 50% reservation for women in the recruitment of teachers for classes one to eight through the Bihar Public Service Commission. Furthermore, 35% of seats in secondary and higher secondary schools are reserved for female candidates. Bihar's commitment to women's reservation is setting a new benchmark, and its positive impact is visible at the ground level. Women are now present in every school, government office, and police station, showcasing their active participation in various spheres of society.

Bihar's extensive array of schemes, including the Chief Minister's Women Entrepreneur Scheme, Chief Minister's Kanya Uthan Yojana, Chief Minister's Balika Protsahan Yojana, Janani Bal Suraksha Yojana, and Chief Minister's Kanya Vivah Yojana, among others, have transformed the lives of women across urban and rural areas. These initiatives have successfully altered the landscape of women's lives in Bihar.
