Following complaints of violation of norms, city police and Ghaghidih Central Jail authorities carried out a joint raid on prison premises on Sunday night. The raid which began at around 8 p.m. continued till 1 a.m. Sources from the jail administration said no suspicious object was found during the raid. The teams scanned all 13 wards of prison for cell phones and other prohibited items. In all there were 12 teams.
Dhalbhum SDO SK Meena and ADM (Law and Order) N K Lal led the district police team during the raid. The Quick Response Team also accompanied the team.
During the raid the team frisked both remand prisoners and convicts lodged in separate blocks. They also checked more than 300 police personnel deployed in the complex for several hours and the search operations was conducted using sniffer dogs and bomb detector.
Notably, the Ghaghidih Central Jail is spread over an area of 20 acres -- set up on as large an area as Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar, Ranchi.
Spread over 20 acres of land, the Ghaghidih Central Jail has a prisoners' capacity of 1,447. There are a total of 11 trained jail guards, including three female ones. In addition, there are 65 hired security guards, including ex-servicemen and Home Guard personnel.
Sources went on to inform that concerned over the situation at the jail the administration has plans to step up vigilance and deploy additional security forces.
