The channel head of electronic news channel News 11 Bharat Arup Chatterjee has been arrested and sent to jail on Sunday. Chatterjee was produced at residential office of Dhanbad CJM on Sunday after was brought here by police following his arrest on late Saturday night from his Ranchi residence .
He was produced before the Dhanbad magistrate on July 17 at around 11 am. The magistrate ordered that Chatterjee be sent to jail. Sources have claimed that a coal trader from Dhanbad had filed a case against Chatterjee in Govindpur police station for demanding extortion.
The arrest come in connection with a extortion case filed by a coal businessman Rakesh Ojha against Chatterjee at Govindpur police station under section 193, 386, 387, 418, 420, 468, 500,503and 120( B) of IPC . Ojha has charged that Chatterjee demanded Rs 11lakh as extortion money, alleging Ojha was involved in coal theft and smuggling. Ojha in his FIR also claims that one of the reporters of the news channel also took Rs 6 lakhs on behest of Chatterjee.
Even after taking money, he had spread false news and had demanded more money. The businessman had also claimed that Chatterjee had threatened to destroy him if more money was not paid.
Dhanbad court had issued an arrest warrant against Chatterjee in this case following which Dhanbad SSP Sanjeev Kumar had formed a team headed by DSP Amar Kumar Pandey for apprehending Chatterjee.
The police team picked Arup from his apartment located at Chandni Chowk in State Capital late on Saturday night and brought him to Dhanbad. Soon after his arrest Arup had attempted to get some respite but failed to get it. Sources said that a few days ago police guards given to him by Ranchi police were withdrawn .
While on his way to jail, Chatterjee informed the media that he had been framed by the Dhanbad police. He said that an illegal coal business worth two thousand crores has been carried out in Dhanbad and added that he would go to the High Court regarding the matter.
