The Unit-2 Market Building in Bhubaneswar, which remained closed for three days following a clash between traders and street vendors, reopened on Thursday.
The decision in this regard was taken by Central Market Association after discussion with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Commissionerate police following an assurance that all street vendors would be evicted from the market premises.
As per the decision, an enforcement squad of the BMC would keep an eye on the street vendors preventing their entry into the Market Building premises.
Notably, the Market Building, a popular shopping destination, was closed following a scuffle between street vendors and members of the traders’ association on Sunday. Street vendors forcibly tried to set up stalls in the market area which was strongly opposed by the members of the traders’ association.
The street vendors had been evicted from the Market Building earlier. However, they reached the area again o and tried to set up their stalls which were opposed by the members.
As per the allegation by the market association, the street vendors are occupying the footpaths and the walkways make it inconvenient for the shoppers as well the traders.
