38 pandals erected for Dhenkanal Lakshmi Puja

Monday, 17 October 2022 | KRUSHNA KUMAR MISHRA | DHENKANAL

Bedecked with colourful lights, the entire Dhenkanal town from Baladia Bandha to Korian Chhak and Mahisapat to Similia looks resplendent for the famous Lakshmi Puja. However, the untimely rains on October 9, 10 and 14 marred the spirit of festivity to some extent.

Rains not only destroyed the beautiful decorations of puja mandaps but affected the business of artisans who displayed their products in 300 stalls in the Pallishree Mela. Also, the business of makeshift shops, fast food vendors and a variety of Dollas too was hit.

Laxmi Puja in Dhenkanal was first started in the royal palace, since Dhenkanal was a Gadjat under the rule of a royal dynasty. Later, two artist friends Gati Krushna Pattnaik and Braja Kishore Pattnaik started the puja at Mahavir Bazar. Over the years, the Laxmi Puja, which has turned a mass festival in the town, has grown in glitz and glamour. This year, as many as 38 puja pandals have been erected in the town.

Silver Medha, side scenes and colorful decorations have become a point of attraction for the visitors from all over India. Around 7 lakh footfalls are recorded every day. The puja revellers reach Dhenkanal by road and rail. The town is celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of the puja this year.

Governor Prof Dr Ganeshi Lal had inaugurated the festival on October 10. Lal also graced Natraj Kumarotsav as chief guest, which was observed to mark the Kumar Purnima.

Adequate police forces have been deployed by the district administration to control traffic and maintain law and order. The immersion of idols will be held on October 19.
