On the occasion of International Women’s Day on Tuesday, the UP government claimed that special efforts made by the Prosecution Department have not just helped in jacking up conviction in crimes related to women but also put Uttar Pradesh on the top amongst all states.
Through a communiqué released on Sunday, the state government said that the conviction rate of accused involved in crimes against women in 2019 was 55.2 percent in the country except in northeastern states and the highest was recorded in Uttar Pradesh. The conviction rate was 50.6 percent in Uttarakhand, 45.5 percent in Rajasthan, 44.7 percent in Jharkhand, 32.3 percent in Chhattisgarh, 26.5 percent in Madhya Pradesh and 23.1 percent in Punjab.
It further said that the UP government stressed on more effective advocacy in crimes against women which yielded fruitful results. As a result, in 2020, the conviction rate of accused in crime against women in India except northeastern states, Uttar Pradesh clocked the highest rate of 61.0 percent. In comparison, Uttarakhand recorded 41.8 percent, Rajasthan 47.5 percent, Jharkhand 51.0 percent, Bihar 43.9 percent, Chhattisgarh 37.5 percent and Madhya Pradesh 33.2 percent respectively.
It is worth mentioning that the UP Prosecution department headed by ADG, Ashutosh Pandey occupies the top spot in India as per International Criminal Justice System (ICJS). The Prosecution department also bagged the first prize for carrying out prosecution among the other states of India and was feted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
Uttar Pradesh is at the top position across the country with more than 70 lakh entries being registered on the e-Prosecution portal. Madhya Pradesh recorded 18 lakh entries and was in the second position while Gujarat occupied the third place with 4 lakh entries.
