It looked for all the world like Sunday's final was going to be all about Lionel Messi … but his Paris Saint-Germain team-mate had other ideas.
Messi's first half penalty put him on six goals at this tournament, which would have been enough to secure the Golden Boot.
But Kylian Mbappé's 80th minute penalty then drew him level with Messi on six goals, before a stunning finish from the 23-year-old just 97 seconds later completed a stunning comeback and snatched the Golden Boot away from Messi.
Messi scored again in extra-time to draw level with Mbappé, only for the Frenchman to score a second penalty to complete his hat-trick and claim the Golden Boot outright.
Mbappé became the first player since Brazil's Vavá in 1958 and 1962 to score in back-to-back World Cup finals.
He is the first player to score a brace in a World Cup final since Brazilian Ronaldo in 2002.
And the first to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final since England's Geoff Hurst in 1966.
The PSG striker is now on 12 World Cup goals in his career, and he has so much time ahead of him.
