Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday commented on the Gujarat bridge collapse demanding a Supreme Court monitored commission to inquire into the reasons of the mishap that claimed 136 lives in Morbi town of the western State.
“The Government should consider that this is an act of crime that has claimed so many lives … my condolences to the family members of those who died in the bridge collapse … but they (Gujarat government) have only arrested some ordinary people … the main culprits are clearly being spared,” the Bengal Chief Minister said demanding “judicial inquiry into this incident … there should be a Supreme Court monitored commission to look into the matter so that the real culprits are brought to book… these people should be given exemplary punishment.”
On whether she would say anything about Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was visited Morbi on Tuesday, the Bengal Chief Minister said she won’t. “I will not say anything about the Prime Minister regarding this incident … as I am in his State… but I will definitely speak about the way the things are being handled here … ”
At least 136 people died and many more went missing when a “just-repaired” cable bridge on which the victims had mounted collapsed. They had assembled at the area on the occasion of Chhath.
“There seems to be no coordination among the rescuers and no cooperation with the people,” the Chief Minister said adding “some inexperienced people have been sent there to conduct the rescue and rehabilitation work,” Banerjee said adding “it is a clear case of negligence because “those in the Government were busy in election campaigns … in fact the bridge was hastily opened without verifying its fitness for electoral reasons… politics is not everything … they should keep in mind that people’s life is more important than politics.”
Wondering why the central agencies would not be sent to investigate the matter Banerjee said, “now I will ask why the ED and CBI will not be sent to investigate the incident.”
