The Delhi Police has arrested Kanarjit Kangujam, alias K K Singh, father of nine-year-old Manipuri climate activist Licypriya Kangujam, on charges of forgery and cheating. Police said that he was wanted in three cases of cheating and forgery.
Earlier, Manipur Police had earlier announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh on information leading to his arrest after he continued to evade them. He has been taken to Imphal after a Delhi Court granted transit remand. Manipur police had put in request with the Delhi Police regarding Singh and asked them to help them nab the accused.
According to a senior police official, KK Singh was on the run since 2016 and he was arrested for his alleged involvement in cases pertaining to forged documents, forged signatures and presenting a larger-than-life image of himself in youth.
“Singh had procured a number of several fake documents and signatures, using which he showcased himself as a prominent personality, handling international schemes. In order to make people believe, he had even got himself photographed with a number of international personalities,” said a police official.
“In the name of the International Youth Committee (IYC), Singh had defrauded several national and international students by seeking funds from them,” he said.
Licypriya was in the news for being invited to speak at a UN session and was conferred with several awards for her climate change movement.
