Amidst all the hullabaloo on boosting immunity with organic, GMO-free, multigrain foodstuff and beasting it up in the gym for that poster-boy look, 19-year-old youngster from Batala, Kunwar Amrit Bir Singh, is getting swole with homemade food and equipment.
Desi jugaad along with doodh (milk), dahi (curd), ghee, makhan (butter) and ghar ka khaana (home-made food) is the secret behind his fitness, for which he has already set two world records. His added achievement — he has never gone to a gym or used the fitness equipment or supplements.
Still in his teens, Kunwar Amrit holds the World Records of India for being the youngest one to do most knuckle pushups in one minute (118). He also holds an India Book of Records for being the youngest to perform maximum (35) Superman push-ups in 30 seconds.
“I have been using all types of equipment that I have made by myself with desi jugaad. I am working out at my home only, in the cowshed, or on the roof-top. I have never gone to the gym,” said Kunwar Amrit, adding that he wants to send across a message to everyone that we can stay fit and get that body-builder-type fitness by working out at home only, and not spending a lot in gyms.
In his collection of equipment, he made using cement, bricks, iron rods, plastic bottles, among other things, including a variety of dumbbells and barbells of various weights, another one for bench press. He also exercises by beating an old tyre with an iron rod to give strength to his arms.
Considering Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Sardar Udham Singh, and Kartar Singh Sarabha as his inspirations, Kunwar Amrit also idolizes India’s yesteryears’ sporting icons — Dara Singh and Milkha Singh — who make it to the top by sweating out in the field and not depending upon any equipment or supplements.
“I am not taking any special diet...I eat only ghar ka khana. But yes...I make sure to include doodh, dahi, ghee, makhan in my daily diet...I also take eggs but that too twice a week,” he said.
Now, Kunwar Amrit has been nominated for the Karmaveer Chakra Award — a global award given to people who contribute to society by showing courage, initiating change, and walking through the less-traveled life paths.
Hailing from Umarwala village in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, Kunwar Amrit has lakhs of followers on his social media accounts from all around the world, including about 57,000 on Instagram alone.
With his several fitness videos available for all to see on YouTube, Kunwar Amrit also appeared on the small screen the previous year participating in a talent show — Hunar Punjab Da. This year again, he is among the 12 semi-finalists of Punjabiya Di Dadagiri — a talent show hosted by former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, and is confident of finishing at the top.
