Leading by an example, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s son Navjit Singh on Sunday got married at a gurdwara in Mohali in a low key and simple affair.
With not much pomp and show, the wedding function was held with minimalism. The Chief Minister himself drove the car carrying his son - the groom - to the venue.
He also partook langar while sitting on the floor with the newly-wed couple. The wedding was solemnised at Gurdwara Sacha Dhan Sahib in Mohali’s Phase 3B1.
Akal Takht Jathedar Gianai Harpreet Singh, who was all appreciative of Channi for holding such a simple and modest wedding event despite being the head of the state at the time when even the common people indulge in spending lakhs or crores just to make an impression, also performed ardas (prayer).
Even as the dignitaries, Congress party leaders, and top Government officials marked their presence during the Anand Karaj ceremony of his son, Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu was conspicuous by his absence.
After breaking his fast-unto-death he was observing to seek the arrest of a Union Minister’s son for his alleged involvement in Lakhimpur Kheri incident a day before, Sidhu had flown straight to Jammu from Lucknow to visit Mata Vaishno Devi temple with Cabinet Minister Vijay Inder Singla and MLA Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal.
Sidhu was absent from the event amidst the reports of widening differences between him and Chief Minister Channi, especially after resurfacing of an uncut video where the former cricketer was heard expressing his desire to become the Chief Minister.
Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit attended the wedding besides All India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Punjab party’s affairs Harish Rawat. Among Cabinet Ministers Manpreet Singh Badal, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaia, Rana Gurjit Singh, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Raj Kumar Verka, Aruna Chaudhary, Gurkirat Kotli and others also attended the wedding.
Navjit married an engineering graduate Simrandheer Kaur, a resident of Amlala village near DeraBassi.
The reception will be held in a hotel near Kharar on Monday.
