CM: Traditional medicine to give UP global recognition

Tuesday, 05 January 2021 | PNS | Lucknow

1,065 homeopathic, ayurvedic MOs appointed

With the world dependent on Indian medicinal practices like Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that the state would get global recognition as the new health tourism destination.

While virtually inaugurating 142 health and wellness centres from his official residence in Lucknow, the chief minister said that the Indian medicine systems had got acceptance globally during the COVID-19 pandemic as a majority practised Yoga or consumed ‘kadha’ to keep immunity strong.

The chief minister said he was surprised when the decision to allow ayurveda doctors perform surgeries faced criticism.

Last month, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) staged protests against a government notification allowing AYUSH streams to be trained to perform general surgical procedures, alleging the move will lead to “mixopathy”.

“I was surprised to know that recently some doctors opposed the move. I pity on their intelligence. They need to be told that the first surgeon on earth was given by ayurveda,” the chief minister said while distributing appointment letters among 1,065 homeopathic and ayurvedic medical officers recruited by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission.

While distributing the appointment letters, the chief minister told the physicians that ayurveda, unani, homeopathy and naturopathy medical systems had a lot of potential in terms of treatment of various diseases.

Seeking to inculcate a sense of containment among the new recruits, the chief minister said:  “Making a career in this field is not just limited to being selected for the post of a government doctor. These doctors have been selected on the basis of their merit through a fair and transparent process and they will definitely follow the basic religion of the doctor.”

Interacting with the medical officers virtually, the chief minister said that our saints had given the formula of ‘Nasthi Moolam Anushadham’.

“It means that every plant in this world possesses some or the other medicinal properties. Some plants are toxic but still they have some medicinal usage. We should perform new research to find different medicinal properties of plants,” he said.

“The Dadi Ke Nuskhe which were ignored as archaic, today in the COVID-19 period, have become the safeguard for our health. The same kadha (decoction), asafoetida, turmeric, ginger, black pepper, basil, giloy etc., have proved to be life-giving for us. We need to understand their importance and make it a path of the future,” he said.

Talking about 142 yoga and wellness centres set up in various districts of the state, the chief minister said that these centres would play an important role in health tourism.

“Yoga has received global acceptance with the continuous efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He formed the Ministry of AYUSH and also established AYUSH University and now it is our responsibility to promote his efforts,” he said.

The chief minister also directed continuous review of the works of Yoga instructors and assistants posted at the wellness centres.

It may be mentioned that for the first time in 25 years, doctors have been appointed in such a huge number in the AYUSH department.

Some of the doctors who received the appointment letters from the chief minister are Dr Shreya Pandey and Dr Wasim of Rae Bareli, Dr Rishabh Kumar of Kushinagar, Dr Parul Verma of Barabanki, Dr Ratnesh Kumar of Sitapur, Dr Niharika Gupta of Unnao, and Dr Babita Cain and Dr Aditi Sonkar from Lucknow.
