Sumit Deb takes over as CMD of NMDC

Sumit Deb, a Mechanical Engineering by profession with vast experience in the steel and mining sector, on Saturday took over as the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of state-run National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) Limited.

He succeeds N Baijendra Kumar, an IAS officer of 1985-batch from Chhattisgarh cadre, retired on July 31. He had assumed the office in September 2017.

A graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneshwar, Deb had worked with Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) prior to joining NMDC. During his 25 years spell, he had worked in different positions and places across the country; dealing with heterogeneous mix of both external as well as internal customers and handling the domains of HR, marketing and distribution.

He was awarded with Jawahar Purushkar in the year 2007 – 08 for his outstanding performance.

He joined NMDC as General Manager (Commercial) in 2015 and was promoted as Executive Director (Personnel & Administration). In 2019, he took over Director (Personnel) and was heading various functions of Personnel & Admin, Human Resource Development, Law, Corporate Communications, CSR, Rajbhasha and has given a new dimension to the company's vision & objectives.

N Baijendra Kumar, IAS, said “I was fortunate enough to be part of this dynamic and vibrant company which is on the growth path by diversifying into manufacturing and also expanding its horizons into other minerals like coal, gold, etc. I am sure that under chairmanship of Sumit Deb, NMDC will definitely grow exponentially.”

After assuming charge, the new CMD said, “Under N. Baijendra Kumar’s strong leadership, we established NMDC as a clear industry leader and positioned the Company for strategic diversification and continued profitable growth. I have been fortunate to have been associated with him and it has been a great learning experience. We are at the cusp of an incredible opportunity, and I am focused on driving growth and value creation. It will be an honour to lead this Navratna Company, and I look forward to continuing to execute our strategic plans and achieve our financial objectives.”
