Controversial self-proclaimed godman Sura Baba alias Surendranath Mishra died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital here on Sunday night. He had not been keeping well for last few months.
Sura Baba, who was chief of the Trahi Achyuta Ashram on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, had been released from the Jharpada jail here on December 2, 2017, more than two years after getting arrested.
He and his two sons were arrested by the Balipatna police on August 31, 2015 under Sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 342 (wrongful confinement), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt).
294 (singing, reciting or uttering any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC and Section 3(I)(x) of the ST and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Sura Baba was also accused of land grab, exploiting women and criminal intimidation among other serious charges.
His last rites would be performed in the ashram and he would be given Samadhi in its premises, ashram sources said.
