Sattriya dancer Sharodi Saikia shares journey of her dance career in ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’

Renowned Sattriya dancer Sharodi Saikia featured in the 132nd episode of Baaton Baaton Mein. The talk show was featured on the Instagram live page.  A talk series ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ is being held every day on Instagram. Hosted by renowned art critic Sunil Mishr, the series is being held for the art lovers.

Hailing from Jorhat, Assam,Sharodi Saikia eminently represents the arts of dance and music of Assam. Sharodi Saikia, who learnt various dance forms in her formative years, found her passion in Sattriya dance. Her first lesson was in Manipuri dance under guru Rathin Singh, then she learnt Kathak in her teens.

She received her training in the Sattriya tradition under Guru Raseswar Saikia Barbayan. She also received training in the art under Gurus Rameswar Khataniar Barbayan, Ghanakanta Borah Barbayan and Jagannath Mahanta, specializing in the Kamalabari style. She has also studied the Sitar under H. B. Dutta, Lipika Banerjee, and Nand Banerjee, and Hindustani vocal music under Nand Banerjee.

While interacting with Sunil Mishr, she shared about her journey and shared the stories of her love for Sattriya dance of Assam.

 Sharodi Saikia is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and music composer, has performed both at the national and international dance festivals including festivals organized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi such as Nritya Parva, Guwahati; Nritya Sangam at Guwahati and Raipur; and Purvottar Nritya Parv at Agartala.  She has also conducted workshops and lecture-demonstrations at various prestigious institutions and universities and has many dance choreographic productions to her credit. She established Rangayan – an academy of dance, theatre and music in 2003 at Guwahati, where she imparts training to young dancers and conducts research associated with the history and evolution of the Sattriya dance.  Sharodi Saikia has received several awards in appreciation of her work including the Devdasi Award.
