Eminent neurosurgeon Prof Sanatan Rath passed away at his residence at Kanika Road here on Tuesday. He was 86 and is survived by wife Sushama and three children. His only son Sanjeev lit the funeral pyre at the Puri Swargadwar.
Prof Rath died of a heart attack. He was a former Professor and Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, SCB Medical College here.
Born on July 25, 1934, Prof Rath got MBBS in 1957, MS (Surgery) from Patna in 1962, and MS (Neurosurgery) from CMC, Vellore in 1965.
He became the Director of Medical Education in 1991. When Rath began his work at SCB Medical College, he started a combined Neurology-Neurosurgery unit. He was elected as president of the Neurological Society of India in 1994.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Pratap Sarangi and several other leader expressed grief over Prof Rath’s demise. Patnaik described him as a very popular surgeon known for his superb dexterity in the treatment of critical neuro patients.
