The Gangadhar Meher Jayanti Committee and the Utkal Sammilani jointly celebrated 159th birth anniversary of Swabhab Kabi Gangadhar Meher here on Monday. Members garlanded the statue of Meher at Kalinga Hospital Square here. Committee joint secretary and Sammilani Mancheswar Branch president Dillip Dashsharma presided over the meeting. Among others, committee convenor Mihir Meher and secretary Samir Meher, Sammilani vice-president Shital Chandra Mohanty, Akshay Kumar Jethi, Kshetra Mohan Nayak, Sudhanshu Sahu, Ratnakar Jena and Nityananda Mohapatra were present.
In another event, Vedic expert Surendranath Chhotray presided over the legendary poet’s birth anniversary through videoconferencing organised by the Swayamsiddha Foundation. Noted persons like Dr Sushil Kumar Bag, Ajit Kumar Das, Gandharba Das, Sharat Chandra Mallick remembered the poet.
Meher Jayanti was observed at different places in Bargarh district. At Barpali, the legendary poet’s birthplace, a souvenir was inaugurated in the presence of his great grandson Manindra Meher and other relatives. Kabi Khageswar Seth Sahitya and Kalaparishad celebrated Meher’s birth anniversary through online at Bijepur. Sub-Collector Tanmaya Darwan attended as chief guest at Padampur programme.
