Chhattisgarh Food and Civil Supplies, Consumer Protection Minister Amarjeet Bhagat on Monday urged Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel to take the initiative to begin a Raipur-Varanasi flight service via Ambikapur.
The southern part of Chhattisgarh has been connected by flight service from Jagdalpur and Raipur to Hyderabad.
Bhagat said in a letter to the Chief Minister that now priority should be given to the northern part of the state.
The area geographically situated in the northern part having borders with Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh has ample opportunities for tourism besides other factors.
He pointed out that for development of Darima Airport in Ambikapur, the matter was raised before Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The need to upgrade the airport as a 3-C category one required developmental works.
Puri has said the Union government has already planned the development of Ambikapur airport. The sanction for upgrading the airport has been given.
The Public Works Department has undertaken the planning for expansion of the runway and related works.
