B'desh to reschedule SL Test tour
New Delhi: Bangladesh is planning to tour Sri Lanka in October for their rescheduled three-Test series, following the postponement of this year's T20 World Cup. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, BCB are currently in talks with its Sri Lankan counterparts (SLC) and if everything falls into place “Bangladesh men's pending three-Test series against hosts Sri Lanka could be rescheduled to October.”
Carlsen beat anand in Legends of Chess
Chennai: India's Viswanathan Anand suffered his second consecutive loss, going down to world No 1 Magnus Carlsen in the second round of the $150,000 chess24 Legends of Chess online tournament. The former world champion had kept the Norwegian ace in check in three games of the best-of-four contest before slipping 1.5-2.5 by in the final game late on Wednesday.
Emery to coach Villarreal for 3 seasons
Villarreal: Spanish club Villarreal on Thursday announced Unai Emery as manager for the next three seasons. Emery was sacked as Arsenal's coach in November 2019 after 18 months at helm. Emery, who has coached Almeria, Valencia and Sevilla in the Spanish top-flight before, will be presented as Villarreal manager at the their home ground on Monday.
Halep signs up for Prague event
Prague: World No 2 Simona Halep on Wednesday said that she will play the WTA Prague clay court tournament in August, adding further doubt to her participation in the US Open. “Hi everyone. I can't wait to take part in the tournament in the magnificent city of Prague. See you in August,” the reigning Wimbledon champ said in a video message. The Prague tourney runs from August 10-16.
ICC postpones two qualifying events
Dubai: The Covid-19 pandemic continued to take a toll on the sporting calendar with ICC on Thursday postponing this year's qualifying events for two separate tournaments due to the global health crisis. The ICC has postponed September's Men's World Cup League 2 series to be hosted in Namibia and the U19 World Cup Regional Qualifier Division 2 due to take place in August in Tanzania.
FIDE Online Chess Olympiad from July 25
Chennai: The FIDE Online Chess Olympiad, which will feature top players like world No 3 Ding Liren and IViswanathan Anand among others, will be held from July 25 to August 30. Teams from 163 countries will take part in the first-ever online Olympiad. Russia is the top-ranked team, followed by China, USA, Armenia and Ukraine. The India team, captained by Vidit Santosh Gujrati, is the seventh-seed in the prestigious competition.
Manangoi suspended in doping case
Monaco: Former 1,500-meter world champion Elijah Manangoi was provisionally suspended on Thursday for missing doping tests. The Athletics Integrity Unit said the Kenyan runner has been charged with “whereabouts failures.” No timetable for his disciplinary case was given.
Márquez declared fit to race
Jerez De La Frontera: Six-time defending MotoGP champion Marc Márquez will race at the Andalucia Grand Prix this weekend despite a broken arm. Team Honda said on Thursday that Márquez passed a physical and was declared fit to race despite undergoing surgery to fix a broken right humerus on Tuesday.
