Woman drowns in river, police rescues four others

A woman died after she got swept away in the Saung river with four other family members in Dehradun on Sunday. Local police and villagers rescued four men with the help of ropes but were unable to save the woman. Her body was found on the bank of the river a few kilometres ahead of where she was swept away. 

The deceased woman has been identified as Neetu Lohiya while the injured are Yogesh Lohiya (48), Himanshu Lohiya (22), Subodh Lohiya (20) and Dhananjay (24).

According to the local police, the five of them went to visit Maldevta on Sunday, when suddenly in order to do some adventure they decided to take their jeep through the river. However, due to the strong current of the river the driver of jeep lost control and the vehicle turned turtle. All five of them got swept away by the current of the water in Saung river.

Superintendent of Police (city) Shweta Choubey said, “Our team responded immediately after the information was received. We were able to save four of them while the woman got swept away with the current. Her body was found some three to four kilometres ahead of the actual incident site.”
