A cluster-based plan of solid waste management has been made by dividing the urban bodies of the State into 26 clusters. Out of these, a plan has been prepared to install waste-to-energy plants at 6 places and compost plant at 20 places. Processing plants have been started in Sagar, Jabalpur and Ujjain. Work is underway to start the plants in Bhopal, Katni and Rewa.
For better implementation of Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, workshops and interaction meets are being organized by regional offices of Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board by involving urban bodies. The officers and employees associated with the local bodies are also being advised for better management of solid waste.
Nearly 7212 metric tonnes of solid waste is generated daily in 383 municipal bodies of the state. Out of this, 6537 metric tonnes of waste is being collected. About 1271 metric tonnes of waste is used to create compost everyday, 15 metric tonnes of waste is used for Biogas production, 525 metric tonnes of waste is being used in RDF / MRF and about 462 metric tonnes of solid waste is being converted to energy.
An 11.5 MW capacity waste to energy processing plant has been set up at Jabalpur. Nearly 1100 to 1200 metric tonnes of waste is being received daily from the Solid Waste Processing Facility at Devguradia operated by A to Z Infrastructure Pvt Ltd in Indore. Out of this 600 metric tonne waste is being used for making compost and 500 metric tonnes for material recovery. The remaining 100 metric tonnes of waste is being used to make compost and Biogas through decentralized facility.
The water and ambient air quality of urban solid waste dump sites is being periodically examined by the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board. Last year, 452 samples for underground water quality measurement and 219 samples for ambient air quality measurement were tested in areas around the dumping sites.
