PWD to build FOBs in three places known for accidents

Thursday, 08 August 2019 | GAYATHRI MANI | NEW DELHI

The pedestrians who could be seen hopping around to cross the roads risking their lives would now be breathing easy as the Public Works Department (PWD) has planned to construct foot over bridges (FOBs) in city’s three places which are infamous for accidents and mishaps.

The FOBs will be built at Monastery Market near Kashmere Gate, National Highway (NH-10) and Shiv Parvati Mandir on Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road.

In a recently held meeting, the PWD has also approved the proposal and sanctioned budget for carrying out the construction of the project.

“These stretches are one of the busy and most used stretches. Due to non-availability of alternate option to cross the road, the public risk their lives to cross the busy road. These sections are also known for traffic and congestion, thus the PWD has decided construct FOB’s to provide safety and security of the passengers,” said a PWD official adding the department has received the financial approval for carrying out the work and the concerned engineers are working on the designs and the work will begin soon.

The estimated budget of the FOB that will be constructed  with staircase and lift for pedestrian on Multan Nagar Metro Pillar No.224 to 225,at Delhi Rohtak Road, NH-10 is Rs 3.77 crores and the budget of fob at Shiv Parvati Mandir, Pul Prahaladpur, MB Road is Rs 2.60 crore while the FOB at Monastery Market Budh vihar near Kashemere Gate will be constructed at a cost of Rs 2.50 crore.

“It is good that the PWD is constructing FOBs as that would help in better traffic arrangement. There are 10 black spots in the National Capital and pedestrians are the one who become the victim of accidents while crossing the busy road as they don’t have any alternate way to cross the road,” said a Traffic Police official.

Currently, there are approximately 50 subways and 73 FOBs located in different parts of Delhi for the use of pedestrians. Further, the PWD is also set to construct around 17 FOBs in other accident prone areas across the city under the mass traffic de-congestion project to ease the movement of pedestrians, the official added.
