Prisoner dies while trying to jump off jail boundary wall

A differently abled prisoner, Sunil Kumar Singh lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail, Hotwar, Ranchi died while he was he trying to scale the boundary wall of highly protected jail premises on Saturday morning. Singh, while trying to scale the boundary wall had a fall from wall with his head hitting the ground.

Singh, a resident of Aaklan village under Burmu police station was lodged at Hotwar Central jail in connection with Rs 7.19 lakh dacoity case at Chandwe under Pithoria police station on June 22, 2018. Singh, who was mentally challenged was under treatment from doctors at RINPAS. He surrendered before police on April this year and since then he was locked at mentally challenged ward of jail.

According to Hotwar Jail sources, the incident occurred on Saturday morning. Hotwar Jail superintendent informed the police that in the morning when the jail police were carrying out the morning parade of prisoner, Singh escaped from his ward reaching the ground. Singh scaled the tree which was adjacent to the boundary wall. From the tree he jumped at the boundary wall but lost his balance falling on the ground. Singh sustained serious injuries on his head and died on the spot. The jail doctors and other medical staff were informed who declared him dead. The family members reached the jail after being informed by police.

The Khelgoan police were informed about the incident. In the presence of SDO, the police carried out the panchnama which is details of how the dead body was lying and descriptions such as of any mark of injuries found on person of deceased. Later, the body was sent to RIMS for post mortem.

Meanwhile, the Jail Superintendent of Birsa Munda Central Jail, Ashok Choudhary said, “This is rare incident and only an insane person can dared to jump from 21 feet high boundary wall. The prisoner reached the boundary wall scaling the peepal tree which is adjacent to the boundary wall.” 

Choudhary said that the boundary wall has solar fencing which provides more security to the jail premises.However, the Saturday early morning incident once again exposed the security lapses at Birsa Munda Central Jail.

Many Left Wing Extremist (LWE) members and politicians such as former minister Bandhu Tirkey are lodged at jail.Sources said that the jail premises are planning to cut the peepal tree which is adjacent to boundary wall.
