Polling on four seats in Himachal

Sunday, 19 May 2019 | PNS | Shimla

The four parliamentary seats in Himachal Pradesh will go to polling on Sunday.

A total of 45 candidates including one female candidate, are in the fray for the four Lok Sabha seats in the hill state.  The only female candidate is contesting from Kangra parliamentary constituency.

As per the data available, there are 5330154 voters in the state out of which 2724111 are males, 2605996 females and 47 third gender voters.

7730 polling stations have been set up for elections to four Lok Sabha seats with Kangra, Mandi, Hamirpur as general seats whereas Shimla is a reserved seat for SC candidate.

11 candidates are contesting from Kangra, 17 from Mandi, 11 from Hamirpur and 6 from Shimla.

With the electorate, traditionally in the Lok Sabha polls, favouring the party at the helm in the state, these elections are being seen as a referendum on Himachal Pradesh’s 17-month- old BJP government.

The BJP had wrested Himachal Pradesh from the Congress in December 2017, winning 44 seats in the 68-member Assembly. The Congress had won 21 seats, independents two and the Communist Party of India-Marxist one.
