Man survives suicide bid at Metro

Saturday, 06 April 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

A day after an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Delhi Police, committed suicide by jumping before the running train at Delhi Metro Station, another 32-year-old businessman on Friday attempted to commit suicide by jumping in front of approaching train at Green Line’s Tikri Kalan station that connects Inderlok and Brig Hoshiar Singh stations. The man identified as Sanant Goel was saved by the Police but his leg was amputated in the suicide bid.

The incident took place at around 12:30 pm when the train was moving towards Inderlok side. Goel is a resident of Panchkula district in Haryana. He was in the city to see his sister who resides at Rohini Sector-5. “The man, identified as Sanant Goel, told the police that he took the extreme step as he has suffered heavy losses in his business, said Mohammed Ali, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (Metro).

“Goel suffered severe injuries and his right leg was severed in the suicide bid. He was rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. He is a resident of Chandigarh and had come to visit his sister in Rohini,” the DCP added.

“The train was going towards Inderlok when he jumped on to the tracks sometime around 12:30 pm. Services were affected briefly on the Bahadurgarh city to Mundka section, which were later restored,” said a senior official of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The incident comes a day after a 46-year-old Delhi Police ASI allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a train at Jahangirpuri metro station on the busy Yellow Line. Besides this, a metro staff has also recently committed suicide by jumping from seventh floor of Metro Headquarters.

As per Delhi Police data, 11 police personnel  have committed suicide in 2017 and nine in 2018. This is not the first time someone has attempted to commit suicide by jumping in front of a metro train in the national capital. In fact, this is the fourth such incident to have come to light in less than a month.

Despite the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) taking measures such as the installation of automatic coach-entry doors at certain platforms across the network, other stations where these doors are yet to be installed have no measure to prevent cases of commuters jumping on the tracks. Not only do such incidents disrupt the operations of the Delhi Metro but also put the lives of hundreds of commuters at risk.

On March 8, a man jumped in front of an oncoming train at the GTB Nagar Metro station. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was treated by doctors. A similar incident happened on March 22 when a woman jumped in front of an approaching metro train at Noida Sector 16 metro station. The woman’s body was taken away by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel.
