Jamshedpur Women's College is university now

Jamshedpur Women's College has now officially become Jamshedpur Women's University.  Governor and Chancellor of State universities Droupadi Murmu gave approval to the upgradation process under the Jharkhand State University Amendment Act 2017 on February 18, 2019. The notification in this regard was issued on Monday late evening. It said that the college will be known as the Jharkhand Women's University.

The State Government will now appoint vice chancellor, pro vice chancellor and other officials. According to the officials of State, higher and technical education department, the infrastructure work is expected to start within a couple of months, the tender for which has already been floated. The university has been approved of Rs 89.26 crore jointly from the Central and State Government.

The installation of complete infrastructure in both the campuses- the existing one in Bistupur and the newly allotted one in Sidhgora will take two years’ time.  Admission in the university will start from the 2019-20 session.

 Jharkhand has got a women’s university after more than 70 years of independence. Under RUSA, the State will help with Rs 56 crore while the Centre will contribute Rs 33 crore for the university that would come up in Sidhgora (second campus).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 3 had laid the online foundation stone of the Jamshedpur Women's University from Srinagar. The programme was also attended by Chief Minister Raghubar Das. The Jamshedpur Women's College will be the first women's university in Bihar and Jharkhand. The upgradation of the university has been approved under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA).

It may be noted that Jamshedpur Women's College was established in 1953 with the aim to provide women of Jamshedpur a platform to shape their careers and lives. With time were the demands of the society and the nation grew and changed. The college, a constituent unit of Kolhan University, was conferred ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ and ‘Conferment of Autonomous Status’ by University Grants Commission, New Delhi. It offers UG, PG, several vocational and add-on courses and B.Ed programmes.
