HC orders police to halt probe into Bhima Mandavi killing

Wednesday, 26 June 2019 | Staff Reporter | BILASPUR

Chhattisgarh High Court, Bilaspur on Tuesday ordered the state police to stop investigation into Bhima Mandavi killing till further order.

A ruling in this regard was given by the court of Justice Prashant Mishra in a petition filed by the NIA, which sought the stay.

Earlier the district court of Dantewada gave an adverse order to the NIA and had ordered the Chhattisgarh police to continue the probe. The NIA took the matter to the High Court.  The court taking cognizance of the NIA plea ordered the state police to stop the further investigation.

Advocate General of Chhattisgarh Satish Chandra Verma informed The Pioneer that after the NIA probe was ordered by the Central Government, the state police automatically had to stop its probe. But as some documents were not provided in Dantewada district court, a decision against NIA was given by the lower court.

The ruling Congress, however, had earlier raised objection about the way National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe was ordered by the Union government into the killing of BJP legislator Bhima Mandavi. It claimed that the state government was not taken into confidence while handing over the probe to the NIA.

Notable, Chhattisgarh government had already setup a judicial committee, headed by retired Chief Justice Satish Kumar Agnihotri to probe into the killing of the lone BJP MLA from Bastar, Mandavi. Mandavi was killed in an IED blast at Shyamgiri area of Dantewada on April 9 this year.
