FOBs on Nelson Mandela Marg, Tamil Sangam Marg planned

Thursday, 31 January 2019 | GAYATHRI MANI | NEW DELHI

The pedestrians, who are often noticed hopping around to cross the South Delhi’s Baba Gangnath Mandir road on Nelson Mandela Marg and Mohan Singh Market on Tamil Sangam Marg, will breathe easy as Public Works Department (PWD) has decided to construct a Foot over Bridge (FOB) at both the cross section falls on Ring Road. This stretch is infamous for traffic congestions and accidents. Also, as per the survey done by the department, more than 3,000 pedestrians and around 45000 vehicles cross the road during the day.

On Tamil Sangam Marg, FOB will be constructed between the Sector-6, Mohan Singh Market and Sector-1 RK Puram area.

According to the Delhi Traffic Police officials, “Both the stretches are cross sections and are one of the known stretches for both traffic jams, clogging and accidents. Also, these stretches, currently do not have a mechanism to cross the road.

Pedestrians including school children hop and jump by putting their life into risk to cross these road.

It is good that the department is taking action to ease both congestion and safe travel for the pedestrians. Also, the Outer Ring Road is one of the accident prone zones area and FOBs were much needed in these locations.”

Also as per the survey report submitted by the subway sub-committee to the PWD, on the Tamil Sangham Marg and Nelson Mandela Marg, around 2497 pedestrians crossed the road during the day.

Further traffic density for 12 hours period remained 43861 vehicles at the location. “Keeping in view these

facts, the FOB committee approved the proposal for construction of an FOB at the proposed site provided median opening to be plugged and fence to prevent pedestrians crossing at random,” said a PWD official.

The Baba Gang Nath Mandir (Munirka) on Nelson Mandela Marg, falls under the jurisdiction of South District and Outer Ring Road which is infamous for accidents. As per the data, in 2017, a total of 205 accidents were took place on the outer Ringh Road, out of which 137 were simple and 68 were fatal accidents.

The proposal for constructing FOBs at these locations was approved in May 2018 but the PWD has recently got the administrative and financial approval for carrying out the work for construction of FOB at both the proposed sites: Nelson Mandela Marg and Tamil Sangham Marg.

Currently, there are approximately 50 subways and 73 Foot over Bridges (FOB) located in different parts of Delhi for the use of pedestrians.

The estimated budget for Nelson Mandela Marg and Tamil Sangham Marg is 2.50 crore and 2.48 crores. “A proposal for the construction FOB was moved July and August, which was approved in a recently held meeting. Both the FoB’s will be constructed with staircases and lifts.

The department has assigned the work to the concerned officials for completing the modalities that includes inviting tenders,” said a PWD official.
