30K illegal units shut for clean air

Around 30,000 industrial units operating illegally in residential and non-conforming areas, including Narela, Bawana and Mundka, will be shut down, municipal bodies informed Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Anil Baijal on Friday. 21,960 non-permissible industries operating in residential and non-conforming areas have been closed by the municipal bodies. 

The revelation was made in a meeting chaired by the L-G at Raj Niwas convened by Bhure Lal, the Chairman, Environmental Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority for Delhi & NCR (EPCA) to review air pollution, waste management and sealing of industries operating in non-conforming areas like Narela, Bawana, Mundka and adjoining areas.

It was further informed that out of 1467 industries, 1297 industries have been converted into PNG and 170 industries have been closed for non-conversion to PNG. Also, the Environmental Marshalls have attended 15556 numbers of incidents and settled 14310 incidents at site.

The officials of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) informed the LG that the bodies have been able to remove 10779 Metric

Tonnes of Solid Waste/industrial wastes from Mundka and 41,580 Metric Tonnes of waste has been collected from Narela and Bawana areas since October 24, 2018.

Also, 1014 bighas of area has been cleared.

Further, for pollution related violations Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has issued 230 show cause notices in Narela and Bawana area and imposed penalties worth Rs 1.825 crore and received an amount of Rs 82.50 lakhs.

Apart from that Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (DSIIDC) has inspected 3817 units in Narela and Bawana area and issued notices to 867 defaulters.

Nevertheless, the L-G has directed PWD and MCD to ensure greening of areas from where waste has been lifted to control dust pollution and also directed DJB to ensure drinking water supply at industrial areas.

He has also directed that night patrolling need to be conducted by team comprising representatives from MCD, Revenue department, DPCC and findings are to be analyzed and for any fire incident, focused action is to be taken.

He advised the Industrial Associations/Market Traders Associations, Citizen Groups shall be sensitized by conducting meetings with them by all Municipal Bodies.

He also directed that all departments/agencies to nominate nodal officers responsible for implementation of approved fuel notification & controlling of open burning incidences.

The meeting was attended by Minister (Environment & Forest), Imran Hussain, Chairman, EPCA Dr Bhure Lal, Secretary (Environment), GNCTD, Commissioner (SDMC), Commissioner (NDMC), Managing Director (DSIIDC), CEO (DJB), Member Secretary (DPCC), GNCTD and other senior officers.
