Veteran leader Bagun Sumbrui passes away

Former Singhbhum MP and senior tribal leader, Bagun Sumbrui (94), who was undergoing treatment at the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of Tata Main Hospital (TMH) died on Friday evening. The leader died of multiple organ failure. He was in hospital for the last 45 days

“We gave him best treatment possible. His body had become weak. He was admitted for stroke at the hospital but age related complications cropped up during treatment,” said an official of TMH.

Born in 1924, the five-time Member of Parliament from Singhbhum and four time MlA belonging to indigenous tribe Ho was very popular among the political and social spectrum. The senior Congress leader was a minister in the erstwhile Bihar government (1969-72). Despite old age he had represented the constituency in the14th lok Sabha in 2004 for the last time. He was made deputy speaker of Jharkhand Assembly during 2002-2004.

His electoral career started way back in 1967–69 As a member of the Bihar legislative Assembly. He made his entry into Parliament in 1977-78. He remained into several standing committees both of the lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha during his over 50 years of political life. He hailed from Bhuta village, near Chaibasa in West Singhbhum district.

Chief Minister Raghubar Das, former CMs Arjun Munda, Babulal Marandi, Opposition leader Hemant Soren and several political leaders expressed condolences on Sumbrui’s demise. The CM said that he was saddened with the demise of a leader who had raised the flag of Gandhism in Jharkhand. The void that has been created due to Sumbrui’s demise cannot be fulfilled, he said.
