'Tribals must be taught in mother-tongue'

NGO Agragamee held a State-level workshop on reading and language development in tribal areas here.

Educationists, SMC members, teachers, social activists, linguists, policy makers and stakeholders from different parts of the States and outside attended the brain-storming discussion on quality education, curriculum and problem of teaching first generation students in the tribal pockets of Odisha.

Inaugurating the workshop, noted linguist Padmashree Devi Prasanna Pattanaik shared that mother tongue education is the best education for the child.

He shared that a child can only develop her creativity and imagination on mother tongue.

Eminent educationist Vimala Ramachandran emphasised on need of change of attitude of teachers and how to teach in multi-lingual and multi-class situation in tribal areas.  She also called for the development of self-esteem of tribal children at school level.Achyut Das spoke about the objective of the workshop.  Vidya Das, Jamunalal Bajaj Awardee, shared about Agragamee experience in intervention of quality education in tribal areas. Among others, former Director, English language Development Institute, Prof  Manmath Nath Kundu,  Programee Specialist, USAID, India Balaka De, Dr Aurobindo Behera , Chudamani Seth and Binaya Krushna Patnaik  spoke.
