Greeting members of the media fraternity on the occasion of National Press Day, Governor Baby Rani Maurya and Chief Minist er Trivendra Singh Rawat stressed on the importance of an independent and unbiased media. In her message issued on the eve of the occasion, the governor said that the media is a strong pillar of democracy. This year the Press Council of India has decided to deliberate upon the subject of journalistic ethics and challenges in digital age on the occasion of National Press Day. Along with modern technology, rapid changes are also being seen in the field of journalism. These changes also present various ethical challenges. In the present times, fake news on the social media is also a major challenge which the media fraternity will have to think about seriously, said the governor.
Appreciating media as the fourth pillar of democracy, chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said that the Press has also been an important contributor to India's freedom movement. After independence, the media has also been playing an active role in the building a new India. He said that in view of various challenges in the present scenario, the role of the Press becomes more relevant and important. Independent, fair and bold media is essential for strengthening any democracy. Rawat said that the National Press Day not only reminds one of the freedom and strength of the media but also reminds one of the dedication of the Press towards fairness and high ethical standards.
