Delhi University’s Executive Council has decided to seek legal opinion after an internal enquiry found a professor of the varsity guilty of sexual harassment, a DU official said Thursday.
The charge against the chemistry professor was discussed for close to eight hours Wednesday in the council meeting, but several council members alleged that the move to seek legal opinion was a tactic to delay and shield the professor.
A teacher had accused the Head of Department of Chemistry of sexual harassment in December last year.
The matter was taken up by the Internal Complaints Committee, which found him guilty and the findings were submitted to the council.
After deliberation, the council decided to refer the matter for legal opinion, the official said.
He said the decision was opposed by a few members, who felt that these are delaying tactics by the varsity since no deadline had been set for the matter to be resolved.
Some members also sat on a protest for close totwo hours during the council meeting to protest against the issue.
In an unrelated case in DU, a professor at the Department of African Studies was found guilty of sexual harassment and a decision was made for his removal as a supervisor.
It was also decided that female students won’t be placed under his supervision for five years, the official added.
