A maulvi of a mosque was arrested in Shamli for forging a passport issued in the name of his first wife.
Officials in Shamli told media persons on Thursday that the maulvi of Kurishyan mosque, Mohammad Ayub, got a passport in the name of his first wife Bushra in 2013. But in 2015, Bushra died and the maulvi married her younger sister Mushrat.
Later, the cleric renamed his second wife as Bushra and tried to forge the passport by changing the photo of the passport holder appearing on the passport.
An FIR under sections 420/467/468/471 of the Indian Penal Code and sections 3 and 5 of the Passport Act was registered against Ayub and he was arrested on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, two incidents of sexual assault were reported from Muzaffarnagar.
A 25-year-old woman was raped by two men after being forced to drink liquor at Nasirpur village.
The police said that the woman was engaged by two men to work as labourer in a field. On Wednesday, she was forced to drink liquor after which the two men raped her.
The woman was sent for medical examination and a case was registered against the accused.
Efforts were on to nab the accused.
In Totawi police station area of Muzaffarnagar, one person was arrested on Thursday for raping a Dalit woman.
The victim, who used to work as a labourer, was brutalised by two men in the field on Wednesday afternoon.
While one of the perpetrators was arrested, efforts were on to arrest the other.
