A senior IPS official was suspended by the Bihar Government on Tuesday for his alleged corrupt practices and recovery of wealth and documents showing properties and bank accounts disproportionate to his known source of income. The 2007 batch IPS officer Vivek Kumar is Senior Superintendent of Police of Muzaffarpur and the Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) had been conducting raids at his official residence in north Bihar’s Muzaffarpur and his parental and in-laws houses in Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar in UP since Monday from where some recoveries have been made. The teams seized huge cash, ornaments and documents showing properties at several places like Delhi, Gurgaon and Kanpur during raids apart from 92 fixed deposit accounts involving nearly Rs 2 crore which were mostly opened soon after the demonetisation. After suspension Vivek is likely to be arrested. This is the first time in Bihar that a senior serving IPS officer has been raided by the vigilance. The details of the recovery were yet to be revealed but the sources said that assets detected were disproportionate 300 per cent more than his known source of income. Reports from Muzaffarpur suggested that Vivek has been detained at his official residence where he is being interrogated. The SVU team has reportedly sought three handcuffs from the local police station.
