A 28-year-old man has been arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly smuggling illicit liquor to Meerut in Uttar Pradesh in a car bearing a fake ‘Bharat Sarkar’ sticker.

A senior police officer said that on May 8, local police from the Welcome police station received a tip-off about a person carrying a large amount of illicit liquor in a car, who would pass through the Welcome area while travelling towards Meerut.

“A trap was laid at the Keshav Chowk flyover and the police team stopped a car with the fake sticker of 'Bharat Sarkar' (Government of India) pasted on the bonnet and rear side of it,” said the officer. The car was driven by one Salim, a resident of Patilyapur Colony, Hapur Chungi in Meerut. During checking, 55 cartons of Haryana-made liquor and 10 cartons of beer were recovered from the car, said Atul Kumar Thakur, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast).

During sustained interrogation, Salim revealed that the liquor and the car allegedly belonged to one Hassan, who had handed over the liquor to him at the GT Karnal Road, said Thakur. He revealed that he also supplied liquor in Nand Nagri, Welcome and Seemapuri. The car was specially designed for transporting illicit liquor and only had front seats.  Salim revealed that he used the car with a fake sticker to evade detection by the authorities, added the DCP.
