A team of doctors and specialists at Bhilai Steel Plant’s JlN Hospital & Research Centre has saved the life of a 60-year-old woman from Balod district who was suffering from abdominal pain for the past two years.

Devi Bai had visited various hospitals and private Nursing Homes in the State but to no avail, a Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) press release informed.

She continued to suffer till she learnt about BSP’s JlN Hospital and got herself admitted to the surgical ward of the Hospital in emergency due to acute pain in abdomen.

This type of medical complication that Devi Bai suffered from is actually very rare.

This rare clinical entity usually remains undiagnosed. Moreover this type of surgery needed had also not been performed in JlN Hospital so far. But doctors and medical experts from JlN Hospital quickly diagonsed the disease she was suffering from and later performed the required complex surgery successfully.

Profusely thanking the team of doctors and specialists, a much relieved Devi Bai said she could never even imagine that her severe abdominal pain was actually related to any disease in her neck. It is a miracle that they operated my neck to get rid of the abdominal pain from which I had been suffering for so long, she said.

Actually treatment of such rare disease requires high degree of clinical suspicion followed by confirmation by high definition ultrasound, radio nucleotide scan, 4-D CT scan, frozen section histopathological examination along with biochemical investigations to confirm the diagnosis.

The detection and appropriate management of this disease could be possible only due to involvement of multi-speciality teams and availability of all the diagnostic and surgical facilities under one common roof of JlN Hospital & RC.

On preliminary evaluation she was found to have acute Pancreatitis, gall stone disease and Bilateral renal calculus disease. Her serum calcium was elevated which raised the suspicion of hyperthyroidism.

On further evaluation and upon comparing radiological and nucleotide scan, she was found to have parathyroid adenoma of left inferior parathyroid gland. Surgical excision was performed to treat the cause of sufferings. Patient recovered well without any complications.

The surgical team that took up the challenge and successfully carried out the complex operation comprised of surgical expert Dr Jogesh Chandra Marhual, Jt Director and Dr Sumanta Mishra and ADMO in Surgical Dept, Dr Manish Dewangan. They were assisted by the anaesthesiology team led by Dr Kamra and Dr (Ms) Vineeta Dwivedi.

Dr (Ms) Pratibha Issar, Dr Rajeev Pal and Dr Dheeraj Gupta of Radiology department played a vital role in diagnosis of the disease. Both Dr D C Prasad, Nuclear medicine expert and Dr M Ravindranath, Histopathologist too played a crucial role in diagnosing this rare disease. The entire team of JlNH & RC was constantly encouraged and supported by Director I/c, Medical & Health Services Dr S K Issar for proper management of the patient.
