Bhopalites witnessed a memorable evening of Pandavani Sur Taal at Antarang Hall, Bharat Bhavan, on Thursday.A renowned Pandavani singer Teejan Bai recited the ‘Dushasan Vadh’ as a part of the 33rd Foundation Day celebrations of Bharat Bhavan.Teejan Bai is well renowned personality who popularised the Pandavani sangeet. Pandavani prevailed in Chhattisgarh. Before the Bhopalites, famous Pandvani singer Teejan Bai recited ‘Dushasan Vadh’ in her typical style.
In the Kurukshetra battle, Bhima kills Dushasana, tears open his chest, and drinks his blood, as pledged. After dancing around Dushasana's corpose, he brings Dushasana's blood to Draupadi, thus helping Draupadi redeem her vow while redeeming his own. Dushasana's death greatly agitated Karna and Duryodhana, and demoralised the Kaurava army watching Bhima in his ecstasy of wrath.
Based on Veer Rasa, one of the nine shades of poetry, her recital was in fact a superb fusion of acting and singing. Clad in the traditional attire and having a tambura in her hand, Teejan by her flawless expressions and excellent voice fully succeeded in winning the heart of audience.
Pandavani, literally means stories of Pandavas, the legendary brothers in Mahabharat, and involves enacting and singing with instrumental accompaniment an ektara or a tambura in one hand and sometimes a kartal in another. Interestingly, as the performance progresses, the tambura becomes her only prop during her performances, sometimes she uses it to personify a gada, mace of Arjun, or at times his bow or chariot, while others it becomes the hair of queen Draupadi, allowing her to play various character with effective ease and candour. Her acclaimed performances are of, Draupadi cheerharan, Dushasana Vadh and Mahabharat Yudh, between Bhishma and Arjun.The audiences were overwhelmed as they watched Teejan Bai with rapt attention and enjoyed the show whole heartedly..
